Measure follows Coastal Commission’s recommendations

SACRAMENTO — In response to a California Coastal Commission finding that the County of Los Angeles is not complying with state law, Sen. Jenny Oropeza today called for accelerated reforms to help ensure coastal development reflects statewide environmental goals.

“The California Coastal Commission recommended the county address the overall environmental and social impacts of construction in Marina del Rey,” said Oropeza, whose 28th Senate District includes one of the most populous stretches of beach waters in the Golden State.  “Unfortunately, the county has not complied.”

Oropeza, D-Long Beach, introduced Senate Concurrent Resolution 56 because of the county’s non-adherence with the Marina del Rey Local Coastal Program and the California Coastal Act of 1975.  She introduced a resolution to give an opportunity for interested parties to work together on a solution. In December, she may introduce a regular bill for 2010, which would have the force of law.

“This resolution encourages key stakeholders to come together and hammer out an agreement that is beneficial to everyone,” Oropeza said.

According to local officials, the Marina del Rey Local Coastal Program defines appropriate land use for parcels, sets maximum height and density allowances for developments, and protects key viewscapes.  In Marina del Rey there are 19 development proposals in early stages and two approved 500-unit apartment complexes spread among 15 building in less than one square mile.

“Without a comprehensive review, we risk a further piecemeal approach to a problem that demands better solutions,” Oropeza said.

This measure is in the Senate Rule Committee awaiting assignment to a policy committee.
